Still Coming - Still Welcome

Americans must not lose sight of
over two centuries old willingness

This convoluted,  complex,  even dangerous,  but still a magnificent world of ours has a number of countries made out ~for the most part~ of fine folks. I visited some of them several times, and I can attest to that.

The United States of America is without a shadow of doubt a place with great many of those people. It's been like that since its early days almost 230 years ago. Since then, folks from over one hundred countries arrived to its shores. The American people have opened all doors of their own country to people of this world who wished new lease in life, who wanted the freedom some of them could not have otherwise, who envisioned their kids having a decent life and bright future in a place worth living in.

Great numbers of them came to stay and to spend the rest of their lives in the country they believed in. It is huge and vast the number of immigrants who ~throughout great many decades~ had to offer their knowledge, experience, abilities, plain hard work, or a combination of all-of-the-above which helped make the United States of America the richest, the most powerful, and the most advanced country in the entire world.

The doors that have never been closed clearly show and represent very well intended thoughts and the good feelings of good people who consistently wanted to do well for people of the world. Those thinkings and feelings have been an American tradition and were praised and recognized in a gift from the French people:  The Statue of Liberty.

this is the reason why I said that "We must not
lose sight of over two centuries old willingness"

Before I try to make a point on this subject, I would like to elaborate on the case of an immigrant that I read about.  In my opinion, this case very well represents who were a great many immigrants in the past of our country's history.

This man was born in Russia. He lived in there until he was an adult, and he eventually got married. He was working in several formulations for women's make-up. He came to have few customers, but it was not enough to make a living out of that income.

Consequently, he had a regular job to survive.  Nonetheless, this man was not a good candidate to have a regular job.  Often, he quits his job or he gets fired.  The man was bouncing from one job to another unable to keep steady income.  His wife was already complaining for quite some time about a feeble and flimsy economic situation they had. After some time, his wife left him.

Heart broken, depressed, and in such poor situation, this man thought that ~since he is now free again and with nobody to be responsible for~ he should leave Russia.

As a result of his thoughts and feelings, that man worked for some time in jobs he did not like at all.  His intents were to save up some money to come to a country he heard so much about:  the U.S.A.

Eventually, time went by, and this man finally saw the Statue of Liberty standing tall in the horizon giving him the welcome he had hoped for.  The emotional sight, he admits, was the beginning of a brand new life with the compliments of the American people.

He soon finds a job. A kind of work he does not like to do nor he is well adapted to do. Nonetheless, it was a job.  It would keep him alive in a big and exciting city: New York. Without friends, he often went to the movies during his days off.  The rather mundane activity was exciting to him considering his solitude.  Those movies ~and the power of observation~ turned out to be more than enough to change his life forever.

It was watching the American movies when he noticed something calling his attention. He was surprised that Hollywood studios had not solved the problem of a lipstick mark left when an actor kisses an actress.  Almost instantly, he realized that all his lipsticks leave only a little mark, and that he can still make changes to his formulations to make his lipsticks leave no marks at all.

Once again, this man was on his quest to save up some more money.  This time, all his intents had a new horizon with a name written all over it:  Hollywood.

He eventually took his more adopted to Hollywood's needs lipsticks to the big studios. He eventually was given the opportunity to present to movie directors, and producers, what he is capable of making.  The response and acceptance was instantaneous, and he receives many orders for lipsticks as well as for other of his products some of which he adopted to Hollywood's needs.  The man's success was easy to anticipate.

This man from Russia who arrived to the U.S.A. distrusted, alone, with a broken heart, and who so hopefully looked at the Statue of Liberty created a company several years after that day.  We all know the name of that man's company.  Today, it is well known throughout the world for its premier line of cosmetics which still remains the most used line by Hollywood studios.  The name is Max Factor.

This man's story is by no stretch of any imagination an isolated case. It would certainly be impossible to count cases as that of this man.  Their successes and contributions to make this great country of ours even greater indeed go beyond business or products. An example is the large number of immigrants who fought wars ~and some performed heroic acts~ elbow to elbow with American soldiers, sailors, and Marines.

The point I want to make is at all related to the situation that our country confronts for some few decades and into this XXI century.  I have heard and read that an estimated thirteen million immigrants who arrived illegally to our country live among us.

I have also heard great many people saying that they should be allowed to stay in the U.S. simply because this country was built and created by immigrants.  Yes, it was; but it was not built and created by immigrants that arrived illegally and stayed illegally.

My view, one that I am very convinced of, is that this country has been blessed by the successes and contributions of immigrants such as those men I mentioned above; and by that of less known folks that immigrated with such intent of making their lives in our country, and become part of it by learning the language of the American people and by becoming healthfully integrated.

Furthermore, I am totally convinced that millions of immigrants show lack of integration ~or unwillingness to integrate~ as well as inability to learn the language of those who share their home with them.  It is exposed in clear message sent by every TV channel, radio station, and printed publication in Spanish.  One easy to understand message to Americans:  "Spanish-spoken immigrants do not integrate, and they are unable to learn".

We Americans must not lose sight of the two centuries old willingness that we have to open our home and our arms in ways nobody else does in this world.  Let's continue a tradition of providing help and remain offering a chance to those who otherwise would possible never be given any chance to a better life unless Americans with warm hearts extend them a big hand.

However, it is my fervent opinion that none of this means nor implies that today's new wave of immigrants could be seen as those in the past.  Every representing case that I mentioned above describe immigrants opposite to those who come in and remain illegally, and massively different to those who are unwilling to integrate and incapable to learn at least a basic English language.
