Some consumers are very cost conscious, even if it means sacrificing quality. If you are one of them, keep on reading. It is because there are ways to get high potency fish oil, and still remain financially solvent.

When we speak about high potency fish oil, we are really talking about the DHA - EPA content, and not the amount of oil. For instance, 1,000mg [1 gram] capsule should have a total of 400mg to 500mg of DHA and EPA. Any other additives like omega 9s or vitamin E [acting as a preservative and antioxidant] may be useful, but do not count.

Labels in low potency products are vague. They state total quantities of Omega 3 or the Omegas all combined. They are not specific for a reason. Avoid them. Keep your money.

"That's all good, but why should I take high potency fish oil?" You may ask.

Omega 3 is found in fish oil. It is recommended by the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer's Foundation, the American Eye Institute, the F.D.A., and the European Food Safety Authority. A recent Harvard study found Omega 3 deficiencies as the number six killer in the U.S.A. behind tobacco, high cholesterol, and obesity.

The F.D.A. advices that a active adult should take around 2,000mg to 3,000mg of Omega 3 a day. However, in most western societies, the daily meals combined provide 125mg. That is not a misprint. Only 125mg !

Put another way, the average consumer should increase daily consumption of DHA-EPA by 20 - 30 times. Unless your own diet consists of plenty of seafood, you are deficient. This is why the high potency fish oil supplement market is growing. There is no realistic way to keep nutritionally balanced without this help. The good news is that it is possible to fix the problem, but it must be done correctly.

If you want to take the amount needed, you need a pure, high quality supplement. You do not want to take 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day of a mediocre product likely to have chemical additives, and heavy metals. The recommended amount of 2 to 3 grams of such product will definitely be most unhealthy, and even harmful.

Editor's Note: Although the quantity mentioned in this article is correct, it may not be necessary to consume it "every day for extended periods of time." Eating fish rich in
Omega 3 ~or a high quality product~ every other day or even twice each week for
extended periods of time is considered to be healthful enough.
